Kings Relocation Overview on ESPN.com and an Inside Look at Anaheim’s Honda Center

Quick hit here on the relocation front…

My overview of the Kings’ situation ran on ESPN.com today, so be sure to check that out. One quick point relating to the TV rights element: the Kings’ current deal, I’ve been told on good authority, is worth approximately $11 million annually with Comcast.

That figure has not been published previously, I don’t believe, and it’s key in considering how much they stand to gain by making the move to Southern California. Obviously the Lakers exist in a different stratosphere than the Kings or the would-be Royals, but I was shocked to hear – again, from someone with a vested interest here – that the reported figures for their Time Warner deal of 20 years and a combined $3 billion were significantly low.

Those figures had reportedly been refuted by the Lakers and Time Warner, but I found the notion that they might be low simply incredible. They come into play on two fronts: Fox Sports West now only has one season left with the Lakers and is certainly on the lookout for a new partner as a result, and the Lakers’ TV numbers obviously show the highest end of that element. Also, in case you missed it, Arash Markazi of ESPNLA reported recently that a Kings move to Anaheim would decrease the Lakers’ deal by nearly 10 percent.

Speaking of Markazi, he penned another piece detailing how and why the Honda Center would be a good fit as a venue for the Royals should the move be finalized. Along those lines, I present raw and uncut iPhone video from within those walls taken at the NCAA Regionals in Anaheim last weekend.

Of particular note are the locker rooms, as they’re clearly in need of the sort of upgrade that is now possible with the Anaheim City Council’s passing of the $75 million bond deal on Tuesday.

  3. Wow, the visitor’s dressing room is almost as nice as the Kings’ at Arco.
